It's been a scorcher of a week and this weekend won't be much of a relief. Here are five foods that will keep your body temperature down while the sun is up:
Veggies: Specifically green leafy vegetables. They are high in water and help the body release heat. Cucumbers are also a great for cooling down. EatingWell.com has a great recipe for Japanese Cucumber Salad.
Fruit: Instead of reaching for that scoop of ice cream, throw together a fruit salad. Ice cream will actually heat your body up after you've ingested trying to burn off the calories. Watermelon, oranges, pears, grapes, and bananas are all 90% water. Excellent hydration! Toss with a cup of limeade concentrate (Grown Ups: or defrosted marjarita mix) and 1/4 cup of honey. Delicious and easy!
Chickpeas: It takes a lot of heat on your grill and a lot of heat from your body to cook and then eat that hamburger. A better summer substitute are chickpeas which are high in fiber and protein. Quinoa is also high in protein. Try this Greek Quinoa Salad from Food.com
Basil: Remember when we said leafy greens help cool you down? Same goes for leafy herbs such as basil and mint. Additionally, mint triggers cold-sensitive nerves in your mouth. Add to your ice water or throw it in your favorite salad.
Chile Peppers: This may seems counter productive, but adding a spicy heat will cause a chemical reaction in your body to make you sweat. Sweat is a biological defense to overheating.
