Federal Hill, Providence RI
Federal Hill retains the nickname “Little Italy” because of the early influx of Italian-American immigrants that made the neighborhood their home. While it’s true that the Atwells Avenue section of the neighborhood is flush with over 20 Italian restaurants, the location currently features cuisine of all types. Due to its close proximity to Johnson and Wales University, the area is a magnet for dozens of talented chefs.
Atwells Avenue is the cultural Mecca of Federal Hill. Every year, the avenue is flooded with participants in Providence’s Columbus Day Parade. The Columbus Theater, a historic building established on Atwells in 1929, features a main theater and an upper level with a total of 1,051 seats. The venue participates in the Rhode Island International Film Festival each year.
Parks are another common sight for those with apartment rentals in Federal Hill. Garibaldi Square is a half-acre of greenery named for the Italian national hero Giuseppe Garibaldi.
